[ARCHIVED] Historical Commission Celebrates 50 Years of Preserving Local Heritage

NF - HC 50th Anniversary

This month, the Uwchlan Township Historical Commission (UTHC) proudly celebrated its 50th anniversary, marking five decades of preserving and promoting the rich history of Uwchlan Township. Established on May 12, 1975, the Commission has played an essential role in safeguarding its historical landmarks and fostering civic pride.

In a proclamation issued by the Uwchlan Township Board of Supervisors, the Commission was lauded for its tireless dedication to protecting the township’s heritage. The proclamation recognized the Commission’s stewardship of the historic Cadwalader House and Edith P. Moore Schoolhouse, both of which serve as living testaments to Uwchlan’s vibrant past. The document also paid tribute to the volunteers who have contributed their time, talents, and passion to ensure that Uwchlan’s legacy is both preserved and shared for future generations.

“This is more than an anniversary; it’s a celebration of the countless hours, dedication, and love for history shown by the members of the Uwchlan Township Historical Commission,” said Township Manager Robert Kagel. “Their work has kept the stories of our community alive, ensuring they inspire and educate future generations.”

The Commission continues to invite the public to engage with local history through its monthly open house events, held the first Sunday of each month from April through November, at the Edith P. Moore Schoolhouse and the Cadwalader House. These open houses provide visitors with immersive experiences into the township’s past, connecting them with the lives, schools, and homes of earlier generations.

UTHC’s commitment to education and public engagement was further highlighted during the 2024 Town Tour and Village Walk at Baird House and Park. Over 150 participants explored 15 historic and ecological stations across the property, including the Veteran’s Memorial, restored Pugh Room, and original 1775 date stone. Attendees learned about the evolution of the land, including its natural features and newly installed outdoor chessboard by Boy Scout Henry Michael of Troop #216.

In addition to its events, the UTHC has played an essential role in preserving Uwchlan’s heritage through a series of published works. These include Uwchlan Township: 300 Years Above the Valley (2011) by Susannah Brody and Mary Lou Buchenauer, a 192-page chronicle of the township’s people, places, and milestones. Other titles, such as Dear Sister (2004) and Anna B. Temple: Her Diaries (1990), offer intimate glimpses into Civil War-era correspondence and the everyday life of young women in Lionville during the 1860s. All these publications are available for purchase at the Township Office.

As the Uwchlan Township Historical Commission embarks on its next 50 years, the Board of Supervisors encourages residents to continue supporting the vital work of historic preservation and education. The Commission remains a beacon of community spirit, fostering connections between past, present, and future.
