In January, our Parks Department completed the planned demolition of Shamona Peck playground. This undertaking, while challenging, marked a significant step forward in the revitalization of this community space.

The project involved dismantling and removing the old playground structure, which had become dangerous and unstable due to wood rot. The plan is to replace the playground with a nature play area for the community to enjoy. 

One of the crucial tasks involved digging out the old concrete footers for the slides and climbing equipment. Additionally, the team had to excavate the entire area to a depth of 2 feet to remove old, non-compactable soils. This was vital in addressing stormwater issues and ensuring proper drainage in the area. To address the soil's compaction and drainage needs, two tri-axle loads of clean fill were brought in. This will not only facilitate optimal drainage but also set the stage for the next phase of the project.

Following the groundwork, the team meticulously graded the entire area, preparing it for the seeding process. Utilizing specialized equipment like the infield groomer, which doubles as a rake, the soil was primed to receive grass seed effectively. 

The final touches included the application of erosion control matting to stabilize the soil until the grass takes root. 

To ensure the area sets properly and that the seeds take hold, our Parks Department is asking visitors to stay off the marked area to prevent any damages.
