A recent fish relocation operation at Jones Pond has provided a revealing glimpse into the biodiversity of our local waters. Led by Township officials and environmental experts, the initiative aimed to relocate the fish before the man-made pond is drained.

A new aquatic home

During the operation, a total of 141 fish, two pickerel frogs, and a red-eared slider turtle were carefully extracted from Jones Pond. The captured fish, representing various species, were meticulously documented, with a subset measured to analyze size distribution.

Among the notable findings were the discovery of two largemouth bass measuring around 18 inches in length, alongside several others ranging from 10 to 13 inches. The species composition included 32 pumpkinseed sunfish, 27 largemouth bass, 22 bluegill, 3 fall fish, 1 American eel, 1 white sucker, 55 Eastern mosquito fish. Efforts were also made to ensure the well-being of the captured wildlife. Fish and other wildlife removed from the pond were relocated to the Dowlin Forge Park Pond.

Why we're draining the pond

We made the decision to drain the pond following extensive discussions with key stakeholders, including the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), Parks & Recreation Committee, Environmental Advisory Council (EAC), and residents. These discussions highlighted concerns for the pond’s ecological balance, wildlife, and water quality challenges following Hurricane Ida in 2021.

After thorough deliberations and exploring different options, our Board of Supervisors and staff made the difficult decision to drain Jones Pond, recognizing it as a necessary step towards achieving long-term environmental sustainability.

Future plans

We’ll be working to restore the area to a natural state, with a focus on supporting effective storm water management while safeguarding the local ecosystem. We’re still working on what this green space will look like and will provide opportunities for public input over the coming months.
